The papyrus fragment was found during research into ancient burial materials and is believed to contain passages from Book 6 of the epic poem. Researchers said the discovery offers new insight into both ancient literary culture and Egyptian burial practices.

Papyrus texts were sometimes reused in mummy construction during later periods of ancient Egypt, helping preserve historical writings for centuries. Homer’s Iliad, composed around the 8th century BC, remains one of the most influential works of ancient Greek literature. Researchers said the finding highlights the continuing archaeological value of mummies and the role of modern technology in uncovering hidden historical artefacts.
