The 200 openings grant access to the initial training course for the special career of prison guard. Applications are submitted online.

One of the novelties of this competition is the change to the age limit for candidates: now people who are 18 by the end of the competition can apply, lowering the minimum age from 21.

The maximum age has increased from 28 to 35. Candidates must be Portuguese citizens, have completed at least 12 years of schooling, and have a clean criminal record.

This competition is part of the Multiannual Recruitment and Promotion Plan for the Prison Guard Corps, approved in May, which includes 400 new recruits and 380 promotions by 2027.

In a statement sent on 22 May, the Ministry of Justice stated that "the enhancement of the prison guard career has been one of this Government's priorities," recognising "the importance of these workers'

mission to guarantee the safety and tranquillity of the prison community, as well as safeguard the fundamental rights and freedoms" of inmates.
