According to data released by the EU statistical service, the eurozone's inflation rate increased to 1.9% in May 2025, up from 3.0% recorded in April.
In the EU, the indicator accelerated, compared with year-on-year inflation of 2.2% and 3.2% in April.
The lowest annual rates, measured by the Harmonised Index of Consumer Prices (HICP), were recorded in Sweden (1.1%) and Denmark and the Czech Republic (both at 1.8%). The highest inflation rates were observed in Romania (9.7%), Bulgaria (6.3%) and Lithuania (5.1%).
In Portugal, the inflation rate measured by the HICP was 3.1% in May, a year-on-year increase of 1.7% (May 2025), down from April (3.3%).
Compared to April 2026, annual inflation decreased in eleven Member States and increased in sixteen.
In May, services (1.61 percentage points), energy (0.98 percentage points), food, alcoholic beverages and tobacco (0.36 percentage points) and non-energy industrial goods (0.23 percentage points) contributed positively to the euro area's annual inflation rate.
