According to weather forecasts, temperatures are expected to fall significantly across much of the country as a new Atlantic weather pattern moves into the Iberian Peninsula. The change follows a period of intense heat that pushed temperatures well above seasonal averages in several inland districts.

Meteorologists say the shift is linked to the arrival of cooler air from the Atlantic, which will gradually replace the hot air mass that has dominated conditions in recent days. While the exact timing may vary by region, the transition is expected to become more noticeable from midweek onwards.

Temperatures Set to Fall

The largest drops are likely to be felt in inland areas that have experienced some of the highest temperatures. Regions in the Alentejo, Ribatejo, Beira Baixa and parts of the Douro Valley could see daytime highs fall by several degrees compared with the beginning of the week.

Coastal areas, which have already benefited from maritime influence, are expected to experience a more moderate change.

Increased Chance of Showers and Thunderstorms

The arrival of cooler air may also bring greater atmospheric instability, particularly across northern and central inland regions.

Forecasters indicate that scattered showers and thunderstorms could develop during the afternoons, especially in mountainous areas where warmer surface temperatures interact with the incoming cooler air.

While rainfall is not expected to be widespread, some locations could experience brief but intense downpours accompanied by thunder.

Relief From Warm Nights

The change is also expected to bring more comfortable overnight temperatures. Recent tropical nights, where temperatures remained above 20°C, have made sleeping difficult in some parts of the country.

As cooler air arrives, minimum temperatures should gradually return closer to seasonal norms, offering some relief after the recent heat.

Summer Conditions Continue

Despite the cooler spell, Portugal is still expected to enjoy generally warm and sunny weather in many regions. Forecast models suggest the change represents a return to more typical late-June conditions rather than the arrival of prolonged unsettled weather.

Meteorologists continue to monitor developments, but current projections indicate that the most intense heat should ease from Wednesday onwards, replaced by more moderate temperatures and occasional periods of instability.
