The number of commercial flights (3,582) also rose by 3.4% in May compared with the same month last year, and the aircraft occupancy rate stood at 86.8%, up 1.1 percentage points.
According to DREM, passenger traffic at the region's airports increased by 5.5% year-on-year in both the international (305.9 thousand) and domestic (235.6 thousand) segments.
At Madeira Airport, international traffic (57.7% of the total) predominated over domestic traffic (42.3%), whereas at Porto Santo Airport, "domestic traffic was predominant (73.6% of the total), though the disparity was smaller than in the same month last year (86.8%)."
According to DREM, in the first five months of this year, the number of aircraft movements at RAM airports increased by 2.6%, while passenger numbers grew by 3.9%.
