He was highly educated, came from a noble background, and at a young age was appointed Governor of the Italian province of Campania by Emperor Gratian.

But after the emperor’s assassination, Paulinus’ life took an unexpected turn.

He returned home, married a devout Christian woman named Therasia, embraced the Christian faith, and was baptised in 389. He always believed that the example of Saint Felix of Nola played a major role in his conversion.

Paulinus and his wife lost their only son when the baby was just eight days old. Instead of losing hope, they turned their grief into a deeper love for God. They chose a life of prayer, simplicity, and service.

Ordained a priest on Christmas Day in 394, Paulinus later became Bishop of Nola in 410. As bishop, he didn’t cling to wealth or comfort. He gave away his possessions to help the poor and became known for his humility, generosity, and wisdom.
