In a publication on its website, the Parish Council of Mosteiros, on the island of São Miguel, informs the public that the beach is "temporarily closed to swimming by order of the Health Delegate of Ponta Delgada," following the results of water quality monitoring analyses, which "revealed microbiological contamination."

The Parish of Mosteiros emphasises that this is a "preventive measure" aimed at "safeguarding the health and safety of all bathers," and that water quality analyses are carried out regularly by the competent authorities.

"The ban will be lifted as soon as new analyses confirm the restoration of safety and water quality conditions, allowing the normal use of the beach," it adds.

Mosteiros Beach has already been closed to swimming three times since the start of the 2026 swimming season.

The first closure occurred on 11 June, and the beach was reopened for swimming on the 22nd of the same month.

At the time, the Parish Council lamented the situation and "the lack of civic-mindedness that continues to compromise the environmental quality of the parish."

According to information gathered by the city hall at the time, "the water coming from the Sete Cidades Tunnel is clean, with contamination occurring along the route to Mosteiros Beach," and the situation was reported to the competent authorities for investigation.

The second closure occurred on 10 July, after new analyses detected "microbiological contamination," and it was reopened on 13 July, after water quality analyses.

The third closure was decreed today, after new monitoring revealed "microbiological contamination" in the water.

That beach stands out for its black volcanic sand and views of the Mosteiros islets, making it a popular spot for locals and tourists to enjoy the sunset and even the natural pools.
