Data from the investment research platform BestBrokers indicates that Portugal has reserves of 36.81 grams of gold per capita, valued at around €4,030.
This figure places the country ahead of nations such as France, Qatar, Singapore and the Netherlands.
The aforementioned research is based on the latest data from the World Gold Council and LBMA gold prices. Portugal ranks fifth in the global ranking, behind nations such as Switzerland, Lebanon, Italy and Germany. The top 10 is rounded off by France, Qatar, Singapore, the Netherlands and Austria.
Switzerland leads the ranking by a wide margin, with 115.45 grams of gold per citizen, valued at around $14,850. Lebanon follows, with 48.64 grams and $6,256 per inhabitant, whilst Italy and Germany both have figures exceeding $5,000 per citizen.
Portugal’s position becomes even more significant when compared with the global average. Gold reserves held by all the world’s central banks amount to around $4.7 trillion, which equates to $568 per person. In Portugal’s case, the figure is eight times higher than the global average, with a figure of $4,735 in gold per Portuguese inhabitant being cited.
