It was built in the early 20th century and only completed in the 1960s, after decades of fundraising and local effort. In 2025, it celebrated its 60th anniversary as a completed church.

The building follows a neo‑Romanesque style. From outside, its white façade is flanked by two towers with clocks and decorated with a horseshoe arch portal and a large rose window, making it stand out against the greenery and thermal steam of the Furnas valley.
