The lagoon offers visitors a unique look at the powerful geothermal energy characteristic of this region.

The lake holds a great cultural and culinary importance for the Azoreans. It is famous for Cozido das Furnas, a traditional stew that is cooked underground using the natural volcanic heat.

Surrounding the impressive crater lake, which covers almost 2 square kilometres, you will find active geothermal craters called caldeiras. The area also features a historical chapel called Capela de Nossa Senhora das Vitórias and beautiful walking trails.
