Using inhaled xenon gas, the technique produces detailed images of lung function without repeated radiation exposure. Researchers say it may improve diagnosis and monitoring of conditions including asthma, cystic fibrosis and bronchiectasis during ongoing clinical research.

The technology is already being used in research involving children treated through Sheffield Children’s NHS Foundation Trust. Researchers say repeat scans could help doctors assess whether treatments are working without exposing patients to radiation. The team is also developing smaller, lower-cost scanners that could eventually be used in local clinics, reducing waiting times.
