The announcement was made on social media, in response to a follower's comment. The new store will be located in Casal do Marco, in the municipality of Seixal, and although the opening month has not been announced, it is known that it will open its doors in 2027.

The new supermarket will be installed in Quinta da Galega, on land where the Akipneus company used to be, near the Shell gas station. The new store will allow residents of Casal do Marco and Paio Pires to avoid travelling to Fernão Ferro, where the nearest Mercadona store is currently located.

Mercadona's presence in Portugal

Mercadona had already won over the Portuguese before establishing itself in Portugal, and it is common to hear stories of people crossing the border to bring the best products from the Spanish supermarket to their homes.

For example, in the Algarve, it was common for Algarve residents, or Portuguese people on summer vacation, to go to Ayamonte to find their favourite Mercadona brand products. This practice is still expected to continue, at least in the Algarve, which does not yet have its Mercadona stores open.

Currently, there are 74 Mercadona stores in Portugal, and the number is expected to continue rising. The opening of two new stores in Beja and Vila Real is scheduled for September. However, stores are also expected to open in Amarante, Faro, Esposende, and Maia.

Although it is still some time away, it is possible that Mercadona will open new stores in Torres Novas and Tomar in 2028.
