The Mercadona supermarket chain is preparing to open its first store in Portimão, and promises to make “a strong commitment to local suppliers, contributing to the appreciation of regional production and the growth of the Algarve's business fabric.”
The Spanish chain will inaugurate the new store on October 15th, Sul Informação reports, and the chain reminds the public that its connection to the Algarve already exists through suppliers of regional products.
Algarve suppliers in focus
Mercadona highlights the traditional sea salt and fleur de sel from Necton, which is a company based in Olhão, and their partnership with Necton has existed since 2019 and “reflects Mercadona's commitment to specialised suppliers who share high standards of quality, food safety and sustainability.”
Mercadona sells approximately 300,000 units of Traditional Salt and 100,000 units of Fleur de Sel annually, products that are supplied by Necton and available in the chain's stores in Portugal and Spain.
“Necton salt results from a natural process that combines seawater, solar energy and know-how passed down through generations. The company combines ancestral harvesting methods with advanced quality management systems, contributing to preserving a historical activity of the region and taking Algarve products beyond its borders,” the company said in a statement.
“At Mercadona, we believe that growth should be shared. The partnership with Necton, which began in 2019, reflects a relationship built on trust, quality, and a shared long-term vision. As we strengthen our presence in the Algarve with the opening of the new store in Portimão, we also continue to strengthen our collaboration with suppliers in the region, valuing products that represent local tradition and know-how," Mercadona highlights.
Strengthening ties with the Algarve
The opening of the new store in Portimão is said to reinforce the connection to the Algarve, which is described as a strategic region for Mercadona, “not only because of its proximity to customers, but also because of its collaboration with companies that represent the best of local production.”
