CANTA offers separate sessions for women and men, as well as time for the voices to come together as a mixed choir. The groups are led by singer and musical director Luiza Dedisin, whose approach combines practical vocal development with the pleasure of making music alongside other people.
No previous choir experience is required, and singers do not need to read music. The groups welcome everyone from experienced performers to those whose singing has so far been reserved for the shower, the car or their own kitchen.
Repertoire moves between classical music, jazz, pop, musicals and Portuguese favourites. Each programme mixes well-arranged, all-time favourites with classical works chosen to take both the choir and the audience somewhere new. Familiar music creates an immediate sense of connection and fun, while the classical pieces offer something to discover and conquer, bringing a real sense of achievement. Songs are performed in several languages, reflecting the choir’s international character.
Classical singing also develops a strong vocal technique, giving singers skills they can carry into many other musical styles. All while the atmosphere remains relaxed and social.
The choirs rehearse locally but belong to one wider CANTA community. Throughout the season, members from the different locations will meet for shared rehearsals and concerts, giving the smaller groups the chance to become part of a much larger sound.
Some of the new groups will begin with modest numbers and grow gradually. This gives the first singers more individual guidance and allows each choir to build a solid musical foundation from the beginning.
CANTA Choir is part of Luiza Canta, an Algarve-based singing programme that also includes workshops, pop-up choirs, musical experiences and retreats.
Registration is open for the women’s and men’s groups in Luz, Lagos and Alvor. Choir fees are charged by term rather than per rehearsal. Anyone interested can ask about rehearsal times or book a taster session before deciding whether to join.
