Funded by a dedicated allocation from the Portuguese Environmental Fund (Fundo Ambiental), recent works have officially kicked off to tackle the long-standing challenge of clearing and desilting the urban stretch of the river. Especially after the storms of last winter, these methods aid in clearing up the ancient waterway.

As of now, heavy machinery and specialised teams are working directly within the river, systematically removing accumulated sediment and overgrown vegetation that has built up.

These ongoing interventions are designed not only to boost local safety and prevent seasonal flooding, but also to restore the ecological health and visual charm of the riverbanks that define Tomar's historic identity.

By clearing the river, both upstream and downstream of the city center, the municipality is breathing new life into public spaces where locals and visitors gather. As one of the most beautiful scenes in Tomar, it is great to see the efforts to ensure the continuous beauty of the river.
