The Tren Solar de la Quebrada travels 42 kilometres through Jujuy province, connecting six towns in a UNESCO-listed valley.

Launched in 2024, the service has carried more than 90,000 passengers while providing communities and tourists with an alternative to diesel-powered rail transport.

The two-car train uses six lithium batteries, providing a range of between 100 and 120 kilometres, more than twice its current route.

Regenerative braking returns some energy to the batteries, while fast-charging points allow recharging along the journey.

The system requires neither diesel nor overhead electrical lines and restored passenger rail services to the Quebrada de Humahuaca after a 30-year absence.
