The vessels use the port for crew changes, supplies and repairs before continuing their journeys. The activity also benefits the local economy, with visiting passengers generating demand for hotels, restaurants, transport and shopping.

The arriving vessels included Expedition, Ocean Albatros, Ocean Nova, Sylvia Earle, Ocean Explorer, Seaventure and Sea Spirit, all equipped with reinforced hulls for polar waters. According to Uruguay’s National Ports Administration, Expedition embarked 123 passengers in Montevideo.

Ocean Albatros will continue to Buenos Aires, while Ocean Nova and Ocean Explorer will travel to Ushuaia, a major departure port for Antarctic expeditions.
