This date coincides with the last known nuclear test on the site, leading researchers to propose that Mount Mantap has become a “tired mountain”, a geographical term used to describe an area where repeated nuclear testing has fractured the geology to the point of seismic instability.

This instability is caused by the fact that once a certain fracture threshold is reached, the ground can no longer contain the radioactive gases deposited there by nuclear explosions.
