Breast cancer screenings, an exhibition of women’s experiences and charity sports events are taking place in the Algarve as part of a joint Pink October programme organised by MAR Shopping Algarve and Designer Outlet Algarve.
The campaign runs until 18 October, raising awareness of breast cancer prevention and the importance of early diagnosis.
Sul Informação reports that the “Cor de MAR” exhibition remains open at MAR Shopping Algarve in Loulé until Sunday, 11 October. It shares the experiences of eight women who have faced breast cancer.
Visitors can also donate scarves and turbans for women undergoing cancer treatment. The collection point, supporting Associação Partilhas, is opposite Mango on the ground floor.
The Breast Friends initiative continues until Friday, 9 October, with screening mammograms at the shopping centre’s CUF clinic. Appointments are available on 6, 7, 8 and 9 October and must be booked in advance.
Earlier in the programme, on 3 October, authors Eduarda Maia, Sónia Matinhos, Sandra Matinhos and Helena de Brito took part in a discussion about their experiences of the disease. The Algarve Oncology Association also held a breast self-examination demonstration using a prosthesis.
MAR Shopping Algarve director Ana Antunes said the programme gives women who have experienced breast cancer an opportunity to share their stories, while providing information and support for the wider community.
Tennis and pádel on the programme
Visitors to MAR Shopping Algarve can also try tennis at a court installed by Loulé Tennis Club until 11 October. The club is using the activities to introduce people to the sport and publicise the Ladies Open, an international ITF Women’s World Tennis Tour tournament taking place from 19 to 26 October.
Designer Outlet Algarve is also supporting the second Padel4Move charity team tournament in Albufeira on 10 and 11 October. Around 300 participants are expected to take part.
José Pereira, the outlet’s general director, said its involvement aims to bring people together, share information and support the fight against breast cancer.
Life after breast cancer
On 17 October, Designer Outlet Algarve will host Lusíadas Saúde’s fourth Pink October discussion event in shops 11 and 12, opposite Guess.
The afternoon will bring together information on scientific research, medical and oncology care, personal image and wellbeing. Associations and charity initiatives will also take part, alongside a small market selling independently created products to raise funds for the cause.
The Rosa Talks will explore life after breast cancer, focusing on memory, concentration, sleep and menopause. The programme will conclude with a clinical Pilates session adapted for women with a breast cancer diagnosis or history of the disease.
The campaign ends on 18 October with Designer Outlet Algarve’s participation in the Mamamaratona, organised by the Algarve Oncology Association at Jardim Filipe Jonas in Quarteira. The outlet will have a stand offering gifts to participants.
