The petition calling for the United Kingdom to return to the EU has gathered 112,000 signatures and, in accordance with parliamentary rules, the public petition must be debated in Parliament.
The parliamentary debate will not be binding and will take place in Westminster Hall, Parliament’s historic chamber. During the debate, the Secretary of State for European Relations, Hamish Falconer, is expected to respond on behalf of the British Labour Government.
The online petition, which is reported to have been backed by over 100,000 people, argues that “Brexit is not working”. The Office for Budget Responsibility also notes that the UK economy is more stagnant, with weaker trade, caused by the country’s exit from the European Union.
“Ten years after the Brexit vote, we will call for a return to the EU, reverse the damage, boost growth, increase tax revenues and restore opportunities in the UK,” it argues.
A return to the EU by the UK has been under consideration, with Andy Burnham stating that all options are being analysed, without ruling out the possibility of rejoining the bloc.
For his part, Sir Keir Starmer is reported to have already responded formally to a petition, having completely ruled out the possibility of returning to the EU.
