According to a report by Publituris, tourism revenue increased by just 1.95% compared with August 2025, pointing to more modest growth during one of the busiest months of the year.
The slowdown comes as Portugal continues to attract millions of visitors, but the rapid increases seen in previous years appear to be giving way to a more measured pace.
Figures from the National Statistics Institute (INE) show that tourist accommodation establishments welcomed 3.9 million guests in August, an increase of 1.9% compared with the same month last year.
Overnight stays also rose, reaching 10.9 million, up 1.7%.
The Algarve remained Portugal’s leading destination for overnight stays, accounting for 30.1% of the national total. Greater Lisbon followed with 19.3%, while the North accounted for 18.2%.
Not every region experienced the same level of growth. The North recorded a 4.5% increase in overnight stays, followed by the Alentejo at 2.6%.
International visitors continued to play an important role, with particularly strong growth from Canada, the United States and Spain.
Looking at the year as a whole, Portugal welcomed 22.4 million guests between January and August, generating 57.3 million overnight stays.
The figures suggest that demand for Portugal remains strong, even if the industry is no longer experiencing the same rapid growth rates of recent years.

The Algarve is completely overcrowded in August. You cant even get into the car parks of most beaches
Time to start cutting reliance that only provided low paying seasonal jobs to mostly migrants..
The word that springs to mind is hell
