The Portuguese Institute for the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) has issued yellow weather warnings for the districts of Faro and Beja on Monday, 19 October, due to the possibility of thunderstorms, heavy showers, hail and strong winds.
The warnings are in place between 1 pm and 7 pm mainland Portuguese time, with IPMA forecasting locally heavy rainfall of between 10 and 20 millimetres in an hour, hail and wind gusts that could reach 70 to 90 km/h.
The change in weather started over the weekend. Diário de Notícias reported on Saturday, 17 October, that IPMA was warning of unstable conditions across mainland Portugal, with showers that could become particularly heavy in inland areas.

In the South
The unsettled weather is linked to a wider low-pressure system affecting the Iberian Peninsula, bringing rain, thunderstorms and a drop in temperatures.
For Monday, showers are expected in the Algarve and Baixo Alentejo, particularly during the afternoon, with the possibility of thunderstorms.
Temperatures in the Algarve are expected to remain relatively mild despite the rain. IPMA forecasts maximum temperatures of around 23°C in Faro and 22°C in Portimão on Monday.
However, the rain is not expected to continue throughout the week in the south. Conditions are forecast to improve from Tuesday, with more sunshine expected in the Algarve over the following days.
Forecast warnings
The forecast also shows rain returning to northern and central Portugal from Wednesday, while temperatures across the country are expected to be lower than in recent weeks.
The change will be particularly noticeable during the mornings and evenings, especially in inland areas of northern and central Portugal.
Although autumn weather is returning, this does not mean the end of sunny days. The Algarve is still expected to enjoy temperatures above 20°C during the week, with brighter conditions returning after Monday's showers.
IPMA advises residents and visitors to follow its latest weather forecasts and warnings, particularly in areas where thunderstorms and heavy rain are expected.
