Albufeira, Alcoutim, Aljezur, Castro Marim, Lagoa, Lagos, Portimão and Silves are among 23 municipalities across the country that will benefit from almost €3.2 million in funding.

The money will be used for recovery work in areas affected by the bad weather, including the coastline, waterways, slopes and other water resources.

The support was announced by the Ministry of Environment and Energy and follows the storms that affected different parts of Portugal in January and February. The bad weather caused flooding, landslides and rockfalls, as well as damage to waterways and significant erosion in some coastal areas.

The Government said the latest funding will complement support that has already been made available to areas affected by situations of calamity and contingency.

Environment and Energy Minister Maria da Graça Carvalho said it was important to complete the recovery of the affected areas and ensure that the needs identified locally receive an appropriate response.

The €3.2 million for the municipalities forms part of a wider package worth around €4.2 million. A further €1 million will go to the Port of Figueira da Foz Administration for dredging work at the mouth of the Mondego River following the storms that affected the river basin.

According to the Government, this will be one of the final groups of municipalities to start receiving support from the Environmental Fund for recovery work following this year's severe weather.

The funding follows Storm Kristin, which hit Portugal on 28 January, and further periods of severe weather during February. The Government subsequently introduced a number of exceptional measures to help affected areas recover, including support for environmental infrastructure and damaged natural areas.
