Na Praia, an exclusive coastal resort in Tróia, is now expected to open on 1 May 2027, with reservations already being advertised online.
The project is associated with Spanish businesswoman Sandra Ortega, daughter of Inditex founder Amancio Ortega, whose fashion group owns Zara and several other international clothing brands.
This is certainly not a hotel aimed at the average holiday budget.
According to prices reported for the opening season, accommodation starts at approximately €1,323 per night, with some summer rates approaching €2,000. Larger private villas can cost considerably more.
A difficult start for the luxury resort
The hotel was originally scheduled to open in June 2026, but those plans changed dramatically on 8 March when a fire broke out at the property during the final stages of construction.
Firefighters were called to the site in the early hours of the morning, with emergency crews from several areas of the Alentejo and Setúbal regions involved in bringing the blaze under control.
Fortunately, no one was injured.
At the time, Portuguese project promoter José António Uva explained that the damage was concentrated in one of the hotel’s buildings.
Other parts of the development, including individual accommodation units, public spaces, the restaurant and service areas, were reported to have escaped the damage.
Nevertheless, the incident meant that the planned summer opening could no longer go ahead.
The announcement of a May 2027 opening date marks an important step forward for a development that has been in preparation for well over a decade.
Luxury surrounded by pine trees and dunes
Na Praia is located on the Tróia peninsula, south of Lisbon, which is an area known for its Atlantic coastline, pine forests and long stretches of sand.
Rather than concentrating accommodation in a conventional hotel building, the resort has been designed around individual rooms, houses and villas spread throughout the landscape.
According to Executive Digest, the development includes 42 rooms, three suites, 63 houses and five villas, making around 113 accommodation units in total.
The accommodation ranges from approximately 56 to 560 square metres, with some properties offering private swimming pools.
The houses have been designed with families in mind, while the suites are intended for guests aged over 16.
The larger villas offer additional space and privacy, with features including heated pools, terraces and outdoor showers.
The architectural approach places considerable emphasis on natural materials, particularly wood, alongside neutral colours intended to complement the surrounding environment.
At the centre of the development is the Casa Mãe, which serves as the resort’s main gathering space.
Certain accommodation packages include services such as private airport transfers, breakfast and round-the-clock guest assistance.
A project that has faced environmental opposition
The fire was not the first obstacle encountered by the development.
Plans for the resort date back to 2011, although construction did not begin until 2021.
In 2023, work was temporarily suspended following legal action brought by environmental association Dunas Livres.
The organisation raised concerns about the project’s potential impact on sensitive habitats and biodiversity in the surrounding coastal landscape.
The legal challenge was subsequently dismissed by the Administrative and Fiscal Court of Beja, allowing construction to continue.
The dispute highlighted the wider debate surrounding large tourism developments in environmentally sensitive parts of Portugal’s coastline.
Tróia and neighbouring Comporta have attracted growing interest from luxury hospitality investors, drawn by their beaches, relatively undeveloped surroundings and proximity to Lisbon.
At the same time, the area’s natural habitats have made the environmental impact of new construction an important issue for conservation groups.
Reservations for 2027
With bookings now being advertised for May 2027, Na Praia is preparing to enter Portugal’s luxury hospitality market following its delayed launch.
Reported opening-season rates start at €1,323 per night, although prices vary considerably depending on accommodation type and travel dates.
The resort’s most exclusive villas are priced substantially higher than standard rooms and suites.
For travellers considering a stay, the advertised opening date is encouraging, although the hotel has yet to welcome its first guests.
After years of planning, legal challenges and an unexpected fire, Na Praia is finally approaching the point when visitors will be able to experience the property for themselves.
