The application for the Smart Technology in the Algarve's Urban Water Cycle project, promoted by AMAL and water management entities, was approved under the ALGARVE 2030 programme, the association representing the 16 municipalities in the Faro district said in a statement.

The project represents an eligible investment of more than €9 million, of which approximately €6 million will be funded by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), the organisation specified.

The initiative aims to strengthen the efficiency and sustainability of water resource management through the installation and integration of smart equipment and telemetry platforms in water supply networks.

According to AMAL, the new technologies will improve the collection, transmission and processing of data relating to water consumption and flows, contributing to “more effective management of the systems”.

The main objectives include identifying abnormal consumption and water leaks, reducing manual procedures, supporting the preparation of water balances and strengthening the decision-making capacity of water management entities.

The implementation of these systems “will make it possible to detect water losses and irregular consumption situations more quickly”, helping to reduce waste and improve the quality of services provided to consumers, the statement said.

The project involves AMAL and the entities responsible for managing Algarve's water supply systems, as part of a regional initiative aimed at addressing the challenges of water efficiency and sustainability.
