The Senate approved amendments to the Animal Welfare Act, following backing from the House of Representatives. The measures form part of an alternative to a popular initiative seeking fur import restrictions. The legislation aims to strengthen existing animal welfare protections nationwide.
The Senate approved the amendments by 43 votes to one, with no abstentions. Lawmakers also voted 40 to two to retain the government’s proposed certification arrangements under the Federal Office for Food Safety and Veterinary Affairs.
The House of Representatives must reconsider two minor differences, while the Senate has postponed its decision on the original Fur Initiative until the alternative proposal is finalised.
