The law took effect on 1 November 2025, making it the first country in the world to impose a generational smoking ban. The ban applies not only to residents, but also to tourists.

The ban builds on existing regulations, and the Maldives already prohibits import, sale and use of e-cigarettes and vaping devices regardless of age. The government says it aims to create a “tobacco-free generation”, aligning with the World Health Organisation’s call for stronger tobacco control among youth.
