The orange-fronted parakeet, which has twice been declared extinct before being rediscovered, now numbers around 450 birds. Conservationists say the pair’s offspring account for more than 10 percent of the total population.

Parents Nacho and Trixie have produced 55 chicks since being paired together in 2024, including 33 this year. Wildlife managers say captive breeding programmes play a vital role in protecting the species and establishing new populations. With wild birds remaining vulnerable to predators, conservationists rely on breeding success stories such as this to support long-term recovery efforts.
