Easter is, at its heart, a celebration of freedom, hope and joy, and the promise of new beginnings. Easter in Portugal has a wonderful way of reminding us that even though the message remains the same, traditions can look quite different. This contrast is seen - deliciously - at the table.
Whilst living in England, as an adult, my Easter memories were shaped by the wonderous smell of hot cross buns - those spiced, sticky, raisin filled little domes of happiness. They’re comforting, familiar, and best eaten toasted with too much butter.
As a child, growing up in Portugal, those memories were the folar – that sweet, cinnamon and aniseed scented loaf often crowned with a whole boiled egg baked into the top. If you’re new to the tradition, you may wonder if the egg is decorative, symbolic, or simply a challenge. But once you’ve tasted a good folar, you realise it’s Portugal’s way of saying: “Sit down, relax, and let Easter begin.”
That’s the joy of celebrating Easter in the Algarve: cultures blend, flavours mingle, and traditions sit happily side by side. Whether you grew up hunting chocolate eggs in the garden or joining solemn processions through cobbled streets, Easter still carries a message that reaches beyond any one culture.
At its core, Easter is the story of light breaking through darkness. Christians tell it through the resurrection of Jesus - a moment that has shaped centuries of art, music, and hope. Even if faith isn’t a big part of your life, the heart of the story is something most of us recognise: that despair doesn’t have the final word, that new beginnings are possible, and that hope has a remarkable way of rising again. In a world that often feels heavy, that’s a message with room for everyone.
At St Vincent’s Anglican Chaplaincy, here in the Algarve, we love sharing that sense of renewal with our wider community. If you’re looking for a warm, welcoming place to mark Easter this year, whether you’re a long time resident, a newcomer, or simply visiting, we’d be delighted to see you.
