The species disappeared following poisoning incidents that decimated the local population. Conservationists said years of habitat restoration, improved food supplies and anti-poisoning measures have helped create conditions for the bird’s return.

NatureLife Cambodia has reduced poisoning incidents from more than 30 cases a year to around one to three through awareness campaigns. The organisation also operates a monthly feeding station, providing carcasses to support resident vultures. Fewer than 200 vultures were counted in the latest survey, highlighting the species’ continued vulnerability.
