Portugal’s global appeal continues to rise at an extraordinary pace, with new figures from The Portugal News revealing major growth in international readership across some of the world’s most influential markets.

As the largest English-language website in the world dedicated to Portugal, The Portugal News has seen exceptional audience growth during the first five months of 2026, reflecting the country’s increasing popularity among wealthy expatriates, second-home owners, investors, tourists and the international community in general.

According to Google Analytics G4 data, 7.7 million visitors were recorded on the www.theportugalnews.com website from January to May 2026, a huge 45% increase over the same period last year. The United Kingdom experienced the most dramatic increase, soaring by 102% from 613,000 visitors in 2025 to more than 1.24 million in 2026.

The figures underline the continued attraction Portugal holds for British audiences seeking lifestyle opportunities, relocation possibilities, investment prospects and holiday destinations.

Portugal remains at the heart of global interest

Portugal itself continues to represent The Portugal New’s strongest audience base, with readership increasing by 18% to more than 1.7 million visitors.

Meanwhile, the United States recorded a strong 31% increase, reaching 744,000 readers, while Ireland grew by 33% to 317,000 visitors.

One of the most significant areas of expansion has been Germany, where readership rose by 40% year-on-year. The Portugal News has increasingly focused on strengthening its German-language presence as demand from German-speaking audiences continues to grow across the tourism, property and lifestyle sectors as Germans look to other markets.

One of Portugal’s Few Growing Mainstream Print News Brands

The Portugal News’ digital growth is not occurring in isolation as there is our print growth to consider. It comes at a time when many traditional news publications across Portugal and internationally are facing declining readership and increasing competition for audience attention.

Audited data from APCT (Associação Portuguesa para o Controlo de Tiragem e Circulação) shows that The Portugal News is one of the only mainstream publications in Portugal that continues to record sustained growth in print. While many publishers in Europe and throughout the World are experiencing a declining print readership, The Portugal News bucks the trend, continuing to expand both its domestic and international reach.

This success reflects a clear editorial focus on positive, independent and accessible journalism, combined with a deep understanding of the international audiences that are increasingly choosing Portugal as a destination to live, invest, work and visit.

The graph below, illustrates how The Portugal News continues to perform against many traditional Portuguese media titles, reinforcing its position as one of the country's most dynamic and fastest-growing news platforms that is increasingly read by the Portuguese community.

Building Portugal's International Social Community

The Portugal News' growth extends far beyond its website and print audience. Across social media platforms, the publication has continued to grow it’s international communities focused exclusively on Portugal.

Year-on-year, follower numbers have increased by 42% across all platforms, with particularly strong growth on LinkedIn, Instagram, YouTube and TikTok. Facebook remains the publication's largest social channel, given our older demographic, however, newer platforms have seen significantly higher growth percentage wise.

Today, The Portugal News reaches more than 200,000 followers across its social channels, creating a highly engaged community of expatriates, investors, second-home owners, tourists and Portugal enthusiasts from around the world.

The growth on LinkedIn reflects increasing interest from business leaders, entrepreneurs and professionals exploring opportunities in Portugal, while TikTok and Instagram are helping introduce Portugal to a younger generation of international travellers and future residents.

For Companies wishing to advertise

For advertisers, this growth means access to a unique multi-channel audience that can be reached through our large digital and print footprint, social media, newsletters, video, podcasts and digital advertising campaigns, all through a single trusted media brand. Leads generated are generally of better quality and less expensive than other media platforms.

Richard Clingen, the CEO and Owner, says “At the beginning of 2026 we embarked on a new digital content strategy, experimenting with, amongst other things, viral marketing that has had immediate success, shown through the massive growth in visitor numbers.

Print growth strategy continues successfully with the free launch in Lisbon and Porto proving very popular.

Our social media growth strategy started last year has exploded in terms of growth with more plans to be implemented.

Our savvy advertisers realise that when it comes to new business generation we are more than competitive in price and provide better quality leads than the large digital and social media platforms.

I would also like to add that The Portugal News has a number of new innovative programs planned for 2026 and 2027 for our readers and advertisers. Watch this space!”
