As an independent media company, The Portugal News relies on an advertising model to provide free news, insights, and information about Portugal to our readers. In 6 years we have grown into the largest website in the world in English on Portugal and also our weekly printed newspaper is one of the only growing national printed papers in the country.
Running a national media company is expensive, as behind every article is a team covering, amongst other things, reporting, editing, production, translations, technology, compliance and general administration. Advertising revenues, both digitally and in print, enable us to continue producing independent quality journalism and investment in services and the content our readers value.
The Survey
To respond to our readers’ complaints about the digital advertisements,
The Portugal News conducted an online survey to see whether our readers would consider paying a small amount to reduce the number of advertisements on the website. The results were pleasantly surprising, with over 4% of respondents saying they would be willing to pay €1.99 per month for a reduced ad experience. Additionally, a further 1% of respondents mentioned they would willingly pay more at €2.99 every month.
Ad-Lite website
We listened to our readers’ opinion, so The Portugal News will now introduce a reduced advertisement option for €1.99 per month or €19.99 per year. The adverts removed will be the pop-up type adverts.

To run an independent media, while maintaining high-quality journalism, significant investment and resources are required. Therefore, by implementing an affordable reduced-ad option, The Portugal News continues to invest in journalism, improving our services and providing a better online reading experience for our audience who wish for this type of service.
Readers get to choose
Ultimately, though, the choice remains with our readers who can continue enjoying our existing free model, supported by heavier advertising, or choose a reduced advert experience, an ad-lite experience. Both help support independent journalism and our trusted news coverage from Portugal.
The choice will be left with you, and we stress that it is important to note that the free model, supported by advertising, remains available. From now on, it is up to The Portugal News readers to choose if they want the ad-lite experience.
Also, it is still possible to support independent journalism and trusted news coverage at The Portugal News through our established voluntary donations page on our website.
