The text only received votes in favour from the parties that support the government (PSD-CDS-PP) and IL.

PS, Livre, PCP, BE, PAN, and JPP joined in voting against from the Chega bench.

After the rejection, there was prolonged applause from all the benches on the left, as well as from those in the hemicycle galleries, including the secretary-general of the CGTP, Tiago Oliveira, who was visibly emotional.

After the applause, the president of parliament, José Pedro Aguiar-Branco, warned the deputies that this type of situation "is not acceptable according to the rules" and regretted what happened, since the galleries cannot express themselves.

The vote result remained open until the last moment amid negotiations between PSDB and Chega. The parliamentary group led by Pedro Pinto even requested a half-hour suspension of proceedings before the start of the voting.

The leader of Chega had announced that he would vote against the Government's proposal in general if it remained as it was, and he presented several demands. Before the vote, he met twice with the Prime Minister and leader of the PSD, Luís Montenegro, in São Bento.

André Ventura gave particular emphasis to lowering the retirement age - even demanding a written commitment from the Government - in addition to restoring vacation days, protecting the rights of breastfeeding mothers, leave for grandparents to care for their grandchildren, and valuing shift workers.

On 17 June, during the bi-weekly debate, the Prime Minister expressed the government's willingness to enrich the proposal, but stressed that "this approach" would only be possible if the initiative were approved in general, when questioned by the president of Chega.

However, in response to the leader of the Iniciativa Liberal (IL), Montenegro signalled that he does not support lowering the retirement age, as demanded by Chega.

In the parliamentary debate on 18 June regarding the government's proposal, Ventura even stated that his party would "achieve the greatest victory for workers in recent decades."
