Encarnação is one of Lisbon Metro’s most conceptually artistic stations, known for a large sculptural panel. This station on the Red Line opened on 17 July 2012, and its interior was designed by architect Alberto Barradas to create visual comfort, while the main artwork was added in September 2022 by Françoise Schein.
The artwork, titled “Mapeamento Inacabado do Conhecimento” (Unfinished Mapping of Knowledge), has 32 small sculptures made from steel, wood, glass and found objects. The sculptures form a single “thinking body” that tells the history of human thought and discoveries, divided into four parts: time, earth and sea, nature, and society. The panel is installed near one of the station entrances, behind the ticket barriers, so anyone who passes through the station can see the work that connects personal travel with the long story of human knowledge.
Have you visited Metro Encarnação? Do you cross this station often? Did you ever notice the piece of art we mentioned before?
