Sculpted by Vítor Bastos and inaugurated in 1867, the statue honours Portugal's ultimate literary icon, the epic poet who immortalised the nation's age of maritime discovery in Os Lusíadas.

Surrounding the base of the pedestal, smaller bronze figures of prominent historical intellectuals, including Fernão Lopes, Gil Vicente, and Pedro Nunes, pay tribute to the broader legacy of Portuguese culture and science. The monument acts as an essential urban focal point, drawing both locals and travellers who gather around its stone steps amidst the constant hum of trams and café conversations.
