In Porto, the traditional student outfit is the Capa e Batina, a black cape worn with a formal black suit, collectively called “traje académico” (academic attire). It is a long‑standing symbol of student identity and equality, and it is still commonly seen on the streets of Porto, especially during academic ceremonies and festivals.
Students wear this during praxe (academic traditions), serenades by tunas académicas, and especially during Queima das Fitas, a week‑long festival in May where graduating students burn their ribbons and parade through the city. First‑year students traditionally wear red T‑shirts at the start of the year, then move into the black traje as they join the rest of the student community.
The full outfit is often compared to the Hogwarts uniforms from Harry Potter, and some say that Livraria Lello was also an inspiration for those books as well, as J. K. Rowling spent some time in Porto.
Have you seen these attires before? Would you like to be a student in Porto?
