The species is considered vulnerable by the IUCN, with the Southern Ground Hornbill facing several threats in the wild. This way, the birth of a new chick in this Algarve Zoo is “an important contribution to the conservation of the species and to the international breeding programmes in zoos.”

The Zoo de Lagos states that “the chick is healthy, remains under the care of its parents, and is being closely monitored by the Zoo de Lagos animal care team.”
