Although this Monday, 20 July, brings some cloud cover across the country, the warming trend will continue; maximum temperatures are expected to approach 40°C once again in the country's interior.

According to IPMA projections for the early part of the week, the temperature shift will vary by region. In the North and Central zones, highs will range from 26°C in Viana do Castelo to 36°C in Castelo Branco, with lows between 15°C in Guarda and Vila Real and 18°C in Aveiro.

In the Lisbon and Tagus Valley region, highs are expected to range from 30°C in the capital to 32°C in Santarém, with lows between 16°C in Setúbal and 18°C in Lisbon.

The South will see slightly warmer conditions, with highs of 35°C in Beja and 36°C in Évora. Sines and the Faro coastal area will record more moderate temperatures around 25°C, while overall lows across the region will range from 15°C to 19°C.

This warming trend will be significantly reflected along the coast, where a marine heatwave is forecast to push sea temperatures to around or above 20°C across the vast majority of the coastline.

The IPMA monitoring platform marks the coastal strip predominantly in red, with the phenomenon being most pronounced in the West region, particularly around Peniche.

In the Lisbon metropolitan area, beaches such as Praia das Maçãs and Praia da Adraga are expected to reach 20°C, with a similar scenario unfolding further north at locations like Praia de Esposende in Braga and Praia de Salgueiros in Porto.

Conversely, the rise in water temperature will not be uniform along the southern coast; beaches in the Algarve, such as Alvor and Salema, will remain cooler, with temperatures ranging between 17°C and 18°C.
