The current tax costs one euro and will now cost two euros, remaining below the estimated price per overnight stay in the city, which reached €3.49.

In a press release, the municipality of Coimbra states that the proposal, now approved, “results from the annual evaluation of the execution of the current regulations and the updating of the respective economic and financial justification, prepared based on municipal execution data from 2025.”

The executive also reveals that a technical study found that municipal expenses related to tourism activity “amounted to 1.94 million euros in 2025, to which are added approximately 36.95 million euros in indirect expenses.”

The municipality of Coimbra also reveals that, in 2025, the city registered 698,151 overnight stays, corresponding to a cost of €3.49 per overnight stay, in a year in which the municipal cost associated with tourism was estimated at €2.44 million.

Despite the increase in the cost per overnight stay, in Coimbra, the municipality intends to maintain "the rate at 2 euros per overnight stay," which denotes "a difference of 42.7% in relation to the estimated cost."

"According to the technical justification, this option allows for increased compensation for the costs incurred by the Municipality as a result of tourism activity, while simultaneously preserving the competitiveness and attractiveness of Coimbra as a tourist destination," the statement reads.

The municipality also reveals that no changes are planned "to the exemptions and exceptions currently provided for in the Coimbra Municipal Tourist Tax Regulations."
