In a statement, the Alentejo Regional Coordination and Development Commission (CCDR) announced that the call, titled “Environmental Liabilities: Quarries in Critical Condition”, is supported by three million euros from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), with a maximum co-financing rate of 85%.

The initiative aims to support environmental restoration projects for abandoned quarries located in the Alentejo region.

The goal is to promote “environmental rehabilitation and regeneration actions for degraded areas, contributing to territorial enhancement, nature conservation, and the strengthening of biodiversity,” the statement reads.

“The supported operations must ensure the environmental restoration of quarries in critical condition through interventions that promote their ecological and landscape rehabilitation, mitigating the environmental impacts associated with the abandonment of these sites,” the Alentejo CCDR specified.

Applications are open to central and local government bodies, as well as other public administration entities with jurisdiction in this area.

The call for proposals comprises 10 application phases; the first closes on the 31st of this month, and the final one ends on 31 May 2027.
