APAA met with their friends ARA (Animal Rescue Algarve) at their beautiful purpose-built shelter ‘Cabinita’ in Loulé.

“We had some recent queries regarding their ‘Legacy’ Pet Plan.” Anita APAA’s Ambassador for ARA’s Pet Plan, and Jenny, APAA’s President, signed up some three years ago. “There are 25 now, with several more waiting for papers to be finalised.” Sid Richardson, ARA’s CIC, and João Ferreira, his right-hand man, are deeply committed to the scheme, as are APAA.

“Leaving our pet(s) behind, without any provision, thinking ‘someone will step in to take over’, so we think, whilst we are alive and everything is running to plan. But what happens when it actually happens? ‘It being our death, or illness where we can’t continue caring for our pet(s)?” Indeed, João went to the UK on a fact-finding trip to Battersea Dogs Home. “Even they said ‘it would take time’, ten years perhaps or more…” Sadly, who has 10 years they can vouch for? See ahead into the future? Sid smiles. A practical man, with many dogs of his own. “Not likely, but we can at least plan ahead. Whilst we are able to make the decisions needed.”

An alarming number of puppies with parvovirus is being reported. “If you take on a dog or a cat, make sure it is vaccinated as early as is possible. At six weeks at least the little one is protected from a killer disease. Follow-ups as the vet advises. Please!” As president of the Association for Protection of Animals (APAA), Jenny comes across hopeless cases. “Too-late-syndrome. 50/60€ now as opposed to 800€ later to treat a deadly disease…and it still may be too late.”
