Marcelo was treated at the hospital on the afternoon of 12 August, where he underwent several diagnostic tests and was monitored by the clinical team from the Algarve Local Health Unit (ULS Algarve).
Following a medical assessment, he was discharged from hospital later that day.
Care provided
In a statement published by his official office, Marcelo thanked all the healthcare professionals from ULS Algarve and INEM who assisted him during the incident. He also thanked the current President of the Republic for contacting him, as well as everyone who sent messages of support and wished him a quick recovery.
ULS Algarve confirmed that the former President had been taken to Faro Hospital following an indisposition and underwent several examinations before doctors decided he was well enough to leave.
The health authority also thanked the professionals involved for their quick response and the care provided to Marcelo during his time at the hospital.
Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa served as President of Portugal between 2016 and 2026.
