According to provisional data from the National Institute of Industrial Property (INPI) reported by the national press, 973 applications for domestic inventions—a category encompassing patents for technical solutions, utility models, and supplementary protection certificates—were submitted between January and August; this represents a 43% increase compared to the 679 applications recorded during the same period in 2025.

However, this rise in demand was not reflected in the number of grants, which fell by 39.3% to 108 rights awarded—a trend attributed to the time required for application processing.

Regarding trademarks and other distinctive commercial signs, activity maintained an upward trajectory, with domestic applications rising 9.6% to a total of 16,826 requests, accompanied by a 4.9% increase in grants (13,343 registrations).

The pursuit of cross-border protection also intensified, with a 14% rise in European Union trademark applications originating from Portugal (1,792 applications) and an increase in international patent applications filed via the INPI—from 50 to 59.

Conversely, the domestic design sector contracted sharply, with applications for designs or models falling by 38% to 420 items and grants declining by 15.4%, even as design applications originating in Portugal and submitted to the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) grew 6.9%.
