The open water swimming event, held on 9 August, attracted 323 participants, just four fewer than the record set in 2025.

The competition formed part of both the 19th National Open Water Circuit and the 32nd Algarve Open Water Circuit, bringing swimmers of different ages and categories to Ferragudo.

Competitions

Three different races were held during the day.

The main event covered a distance of 2,000 metres, while a shorter 600-metre race was also organised. Younger swimmers had their own 200-metre competition as part of the Prova de Mar Kids.

This year's event was also used to decide the Algarve regional titles in open water swimming, Masters open water swimming and adapted swimming.

Safety on the water was supported by the Instituto de Socorros a Náufragos, Lagoa Volunteer Firefighters and several support boats. The programme also included an artistic swimming demonstration.

Tribute

The event is named after Jorge Lamy, who had a strong connection to sport in Lagoa and whose contribution continues to be remembered through the annual competition.

Lagoa Mayor Luís Encarnação highlighted both the sporting importance of the race and its connection to Jorge Lamy, saying the event has become an established part of the open water swimming calendar while helping to promote Lagoa beyond the municipality.

He also thanked the organisations, partners, volunteers and municipal employees involved in putting together this year's edition.

The Prova de Mar de Lagoa has become a regular summer sporting event at Praia Grande, with participation remaining close to last year's record despite already being in its 23rd edition.
