“The FAT, Cross-Border Agricultural Fair, is already a significant event in this cross-border region, with the primary objective of showcasing the agricultural and livestock sector and reaffirming agriculture’s role as a pillar of the local and regional economy,” said Carlos Condesso, Mayor of Figueira de Castelo Rodrigo, in a statement sent to the Lusa news agency.

According to the mayor, the initiative represents “an opportunity to strengthen cross-border ties and promote the municipality both nationally and internationally.”

The event’s third edition once again promotes “the best of what is produced on both sides of the border,” the Figueira de Castelo Rodrigo municipality, located in the Guarda district, added.

The FAT will open on Saturday, 3 October (at 11:00 am), with the Minister of Agriculture and the Sea, José Manuel Fernandes.

The first day’s program includes a gathering of horse riders and a horseback ride, as well as various activities dedicated to the agricultural sector, notably an agricultural drone demonstration.

“This year, the FAT will also celebrate the role of women in agriculture—marking the International Year of Women in Agriculture—featuring Rosa Moreira, the promoter of ‘A Cientista Agrícola’ [The Agricultural Scientist],” the municipality noted.

Saturday’s schedule also includes workshops, agricultural machinery exhibits, musical entertainment, and a showcase of products from this border region.

Various livestock breeds will be on display, including Churra Mondegueira, Churra Mirandesa, Galega Bragança, and Churra da Terra Quente sheep; Mirandês donkeys; and Limousin and Angus cattle.

4 October begins with a concertina procession and a talk dedicated to the agricultural sector

In the afternoon, the arena area will host an equestrian and bullfighting exhibition, followed by an informative session and a live cooking demonstration showcasing the region’s flavours.

“Musical entertainment and food stalls round out a day entirely dedicated to celebrating traditions and the agricultural sector.”

The Cross-Border Agricultural Fair concludes on 5 October—a national holiday—with workshops on traditional skills and the traditional tractor parade at 3:00 pm.

The parade typically draws “dozens of participants and, this year, includes a competition between parishes.”

The 2026 edition of the FAT will wrap up at 5:30 pm, following a folklore performance and a final dance.
