The Coimbra-based company has received an order to manufacture structural components for 340 satellites, with the contract valued at between €2.5 million and €3 million.

According to ECO, the components are due to be delivered by June 2028.

Supply chain

The customer is a European company involved in what Active Space Technologies chief executive Filipe Castanheira described as the world’s second-largest satellite constellation, and its identity has not been disclosed due to confidentiality agreements.

Active Space has been part of the constellation’s supply chain for around four and a half years and currently provides six components for each satellite.

The new contract comes as the company seeks to build on its European business while exploring opportunities further afield.

Its main market remains Europe, where it supplies major aerospace companies including Airbus, Thales Alenia Space, OHB, Beyond Gravity, APCO, Sener and ICEYE.

Internationalisation programme

The company is also contributing to European Space Agency missions such as Plato, Ariel and Envision, the latter focused on studying Venus.

Active Space Technologies currently employs around 35 people and generates approximately €4 million in annual turnover.

As reported by ECO, the company is now looking towards Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates as part of an internationalisation programme backed by AICEP, Portugal’s trade and investment agency.

Castanheira said the company sees potential in the region, particularly in space-related defence, dual-use technologies and telecommunications.

Initial business development visits to the Middle East are expected to begin this year.

The expansion is intended to complement, rather than replace, the company’s European operations, which remain at the centre of its growth strategy.
