The free exhibition brings together a selection of works from the 52nd International Humor Salon of Piracicaba, the long-running Brazilian event dedicated to cartoons and graphic humour.

It opened at Alameda Shop&Spot on 1 September and will remain there until the end of the month.

Rather than simply going for laughs, many of the cartoons use humour to take on events and issues that have shaped the world over the past five years.

The exhibition includes work by internationally recognised cartoonists including Boligan, Dálcio, Luís Carlos Fernandes, Darko Drljevic and Liu Qiang, bringing together artists from different countries and perspectives.

The Porto exhibition is being held in partnership with the PortoCartoon World Festival, created and organised by Portugal’s National Press Museum.

The collaboration also brings together two major international events dedicated to graphic humour, one in Portugal and the other in Brazil.

Piracicaba’s International Humor Salon was founded in 1974 in São Paulo state and has grown into one of Brazil’s best-known events devoted to cartoons, caricature and satirical illustration.

Porto has its own strong connection with the art form through PortoCartoon, which has brought work from cartoonists around the world to the city for more than two decades.

The new exhibition plays on that connection, using cartoons to look at contemporary life through a mixture of comedy, criticism and exaggeration.

Visitors can see the exhibition on the second floor of Alameda Shop&Spot until 30 September.

Admission is free and the exhibition is open daily from 10am until 11pm.
