The agreement, which includes a total installed capacity of 400 MW and a storage capacity of 1,600 MWh, is described by both companies as being the largest of its type to have been publicly announced so far in the European Union; it also represents Statkraft's first move into large-scale BESS contracts on the Polish market.

The agreement includes the Ełk and Turośń Kościelna projects, each with a power output of 200 MW and a capacity of 800 MWh, located in the towns of Nowa Wieś Ełcka and Turośń Kościelna.

According to a statement issued by the companies, the tolling arrangement involves Statkraft assuming responsibility for the commercial management and optimisation of the assets in the electricity and flexibility markets, such as deciding on the battery charge and discharge cycles. As a result, Greenvolt obtains a reliable and long-term source of income that supplements the earnings already secured through Poland’s Capacity Market.

The storage infrastructure is intended to help promote the expansion of renewable energy on the Polish grid by taking in excess generation and feeding electricity into the system during periods of high consumption in order to maintain stability.
