The Baião Municipality will provide support of up to 1,200 euros for purchases at local businesses for every child born or adopted in the municipality, according to regulations published today in the Diário da República (Official Gazette).
The “Baião Primeiros Passos” (Baião First Steps) program applies to all children born or adopted since 1 January of this year in the municipality—located in the Porto district—and replaces the previous measure, “Nascer, crescer e viver em Baião é fixe” (Being born, growing up, and living in Baião is cool), which provided a kit containing baby products.
In practice, beneficiaries will be reimbursed up to 1,200 euros for expenses related to the “acquisition of goods or services considered essential for the child’s healthy and harmonious development,” such as healthcare goods and services, food, hygiene products, childcare items,
furniture, clothing, and footwear.
Supporting local businesses
Purchases must be made at commercial establishments within the municipality, and the support covers spending incurred during the three months before birth and up to two years after the application is approved.
Applicants who have been registered residents of Baião for at least one year are eligible.
The measure published in the *Diário da República* takes effect on Thursday (8 October); it had previously been announced by the local government—led by Ana Raquel Azevedo (PSD)—on 9 September (World Pregnant Woman Day) as a way to simultaneously support the birth rate in the municipality and “local businesses and the local economy.”
