The local government will coordinate the system’s installation and operation with the PSP (Public Security Police).

Approved unanimously on Tuesday by the seven elected members from the PSD, three from the PS, and one from Chega, the measure will be implemented in phases. It begins with a municipal investment of approximately €250,000. It may later be expanded to other areas of the municipality, which is located in the Aveiro district and the Porto Metropolitan Area.

“We are going to strengthen security conditions and provide the PSP with better means to monitor situations and intervene when necessary. We are starting with the historic centre because it is an area frequently visited by residents, business owners, and tourists,” Mayor Amadeu Albergaria told Lusa.

18 cameras planned

Following a public tender to acquire the necessary resources, the system will launch with an initial setup of 18 video cameras. The Social Democratic mayor said these will eventually become a “daily tool for the PSP,” enabling the force to “strengthen its presence and response
capabilities” in the city.

The municipality selected the initial surveillance points based on a “technical and operational assessment” conducted with the police. This study identified the 18 locations where it is most critical to “strengthen prevention, the safety of people and property, and the capacity to respond to incidents in public spaces.”

Police to operate system

Regarding the division of responsibilities for managing the system, Amadeu Albergaria explained: the municipality is responsible for acquiring and providing the technical equipment, including the necessary technological infrastructure, communications systems, and maintenance; the PSP will be responsible for securing authorisation to install the cameras, operating the system, and processing the collected data in accordance with legal requirements.

There is no exact date yet for the circuit to go into operation. Still, the mayor stated that, “as far as the City Council is concerned,” everything will be done “to ensure the video surveillance system is installed by 2027.”
